Traditionally, Advent (roughly, the twenty-four days leading up to Christmas) is a time for penitence and fasting, observed in much the say way as Lent (the days leading up to Easter). A period of abstinence is encouraged in order to heighten the contrast with the forthcoming feasts and celebrations.
For many adults, immersed since youth in such traditions, the indulgence of today’s growing trend of consumerist Advent calendars containing chocolates, cosmetic samples (even gin!), starts to sit a little less comfortably. It is hardly surprising therefore, that for their children and grandchildren, many people are turning again to wholesome, traditional paper Advent calendars.
Choosing to give a paper Advent calendar, with its simple pleasure of counting down to Christmas through opening every day another window (building anticipation and, at the same time, encouraging restraint), has now become the very mark of good parenting.
At the end of 2013 Woodmansterne acquired “Caltime” the advent calendar specialists who had been making traditional Advent calendars for almost 40 years.
We also took delivery of the Caltime Bobst machine – a vintage cutting machine the size of a Cold War amphibian tank from the 1950s which was relocated from the old Caltime premises in Sandy (Bedfordshire) to our Croxley Press in Watford.
Using our award winning production and design expertise to build on the established Caltime brand has produced our unique Caltime by Woodmansterne Advent Calendar collection.
