News - Woodmansterne Genius card – A message from Paul Woodmansterne

A message from our Managing Director to all those who have recently contacted us or raised concerns online with regard to our Genius card 364785

I’m sure you will be pleased to learn that we have removed this card from sale to retailers and are destroying our stocks.

We were saddened to hear the stories of the terrible difficulties that surround the medical condition of Diabetes. Thank you all for taking the trouble to express your views in this way.

A greeting card is ‘a tool’ to enable people to express and share messages of love, support and congratulations. At Woodmansterne, we take our responsibility of publishing these ‘tools’ very seriously.

As a child, I learned that it is wrong to mock the afflicted and, over the years, I have never thought differently. If we had, for one moment, seen this as directed towards those with Diabetes, we would never have published it.

I understand that, when you are directly or closely affected by a condition, you tend to see the whole world through that particular lens and what others may see as harmless fun becomes anything but… Your strong request makes a powerful argument, that regardless of intent, some people find this ‘joke’ so deeply offensive and hurtful, perpetuating ignorance and prejudice, that we should withdraw it from sale. I discussed this with my fellow directors this morning, and we decided to do just that.

Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts and giving us your comments.

With huge apologies for the hurt we have caused,

Yours sincerely,

Paul Woodmansterne
